  “Turn around. I need to take a shower.” He turned his back, but only after he stared at her a moment.

  Running into the bathroom she closed and locked the door. What had she done? She examined herself and saw some places where he’d nipped her. Her thighs were aching and it seemed obvious he’d bedded her. Why had she thought it a dream? Was she tired or did she just secretly want an excuse to have him?

  Kasey took a shower, dried off, and wrapped the towel around her because her clothes were in the bedroom. When she went back in, Ranni was gone. She dressed and got ready and decided she needed to find the cafeteria. As soon as she stepped out the door, a guard was there.

  “I’ll escort you to the cafeteria.”

  “Thank you.” Kasey said as she followed him there.

  She wasn’t too late since everyone was still there eating. A plate was brought to her and it had eggs, bacon and a side of biscuits and gravy. The flavor wasn’t exact, but she appreciated the effort. Kasey was sure it was Ranni that had ordered it for her. She ate quickly and was ready to accompany an unhappy Olgive who thought he’d been saddled with a worthless female. Hopefully she would prove him wrong.

  Olgive ushered her down the hall apparently ready to make the best of a bad situation. She followed him into a large bright room full of computers. “I see you have the SX 3. Nice bit of technology.” Kasey approved.

  “It’s new and we’re still learning to use it.” Olgive cautioned.

  “May I?” She asked. Olgive reluctantly nodded. It looked like he thought she would destroy his new toy. “Can you send me the message from the Grabbers you intercepted?” He nodded again.

  She had it and pulled it up on her computer in seconds. A few more seconds and she had the ships location and all of the important information on their computer. “That’s not possible. How did you do that?”

  “Are you familiar with the company that makes this computer?”

  “Yes, it’s a company on Purgatory. It no longer exists due to the Grabbers. I believe it was called Mercury.”

  “Yes. I worked for Mercury.”

  “I no longer believe you were a data entry clerk. Misleading me wasn’t funny. Wait a minute. You are K. Haygood! Damn, I assumed you were a man.”

  “Assuming can really mess you up.”

  “Tell me about it. Now I know why Flander was laughing. I thought it was because I was stuck with someone who would be no help that I couldn’t complain about. I will get even with him.”

  “Good luck with that.”

  Olgive took a deep breath and stared at me intently. “You and the subchief have bonded. Congratulations and wishes for many offspring.”

  “Uh, thank you?”

  “I’m sorry. I forget you don’t know our ways. How did you get that information so quickly?”

  Talk about changing the subject but she was glad he had. She didn’t want everyone to know about something that was only between her and Ranni. More than anything she didn’t want Hel or Lane to know. Kasey wasn’t embarrassed, not really. Okay, just a little since they weren’t married and barely knew each other.

  “If I told you I’d have to kill you.”

  “The company is gone so there’s no need to keep secrets.”

  He was correct and it made her terribly sad. “You’re right. I hoped the Grabbers were using a Mercury computer and discovered they were. There’s a back door for emergencies and I accessed it. All our computers have them and only a handful of our employees know how to access it.”

  “Can you show me?”

  “Only if you promise to keep it to yourself. If too many people know, it becomes a disadvantage instead of an emergency life saver.”

  “I can see the sense in that. I won’t tell another soul. Kasey spent the rest of the day with Olgive teaching him shortcuts and emergency access.

  The first part of their mission was complete, but she thought it was the easiest part. Now she would have supper with Ranni and it was time to access their relationship. It was no longer the same and she wasn’t sure she minded sleeping with him. The damage was done and she was no longer pure. She wasn’t a prude, she had just wanted to share that special moment with someone she cared about. Ranni was beginning to mean a lot to her.

  Chapter 8

  Reclaiming Her People

  Ranni worried about what his mate would do. In his mind they were bonded, in her mind it had all been a dream. He had held back his bite, not wanting anything, like fear or pain, to mar her first time. That may have been a mistake but he still had hope that he would cement his claim.

  He’d been proud when Olgive had contacted him with nothing but praise for his mate. Kasey had done the impossible quickly and efficiently. She’d stayed with Olgive for the rest of the afternoon working, and that had been hard for Ranni to stomach. Now he was hurrying to the cafeteria to meet her.

  Staring at her as he stood in the doorway, her eyes lifted and met his. There was a bond there whether his mate admitted it or not and it was already beginning to strengthen.   Sitting next to his female, he nodded at everyone present as a server set his food in front of him. “How goes the planning?” He asked Flander.

  “We are listening in on the bidding. Their mother is bringing more than expected. Any ideas why?” Flander asked the room in general. Both of the younger Haygoods shook their heads but Kasey looked down. “Whatever it is, the enemy knows. Shouldn’t your allies also be aware?”

  “She was making groundbreaking strides against Morgan’s syndrome.” Kasey admitted.

  “Isn’t that the brain eating illness? It’s one hundred percent fatal? It started as hoof and mouth disease in your human cattle?” Ranni asked.

  “Yes but it kept changing species until it eventually went into humans when it mutated and became airborne. It’s been a dreaded disease but had only claimed a small percentage of the population. Lately, it has had an upward surge. She discovered a vaccine.”

  “Is that what they’re after?” Ranni asked.

  “Maybe, but they won’t have a monopoly on it. She already sent everything to Human Health Agenda. They’ve already started to manufacture the vacci
ne and it will be distributed soon.”

  “Maybe they weren’t aware. What will she do next?” Ranni questioned.

  “She’ll look for a cure.”

  “I thought your mother was a biologist?”

  “She is, but she’s also a trained medical doctor. She just went into research and up to now, she’s worked with plant not people.”

  “Having that information earlier might have helped.” Ranni observed.

  “It is what it is. We need to move forward now.” Kasey pointed out.

  “Once we have the buyers, we will select which teams go where. One hundred teams are on standby.” Flander explained.

  One hundred teams of four, meaning four hundred of the four thousand standard crew would be leaving the ship. “How will we do that when we only have fifty scout quality ships?” Ranni asked.

  “You remember the exoskeletons we were working on?” Olgive asked.

  “Yes, you had a large number but the programing wasn’t adequate to carryout exact functions.” Ranni remembered.

  “Yes, that is no longer true. We’ve already upgraded five and will do more tomorrow and the next day. We also hope to use the ship to deploy several teams.” Olgive replied.

  “You have a nest of buyers?”

  “Cadasis 5 has seven buyers and it is within a reasonable distance.” Flander jumped in.

  “Not surprising since it is an industrial center. Those buyers are under our rule and they know slavery is illegal.” Ranni said.

  “That’s true, but their government allows for indentured servitude. If the contract is worded correctly, it might stand in court.” Flander explained.

  “If they took it to court, they would regret it.”

  “Please don’t say that out loud.” Flander flinched. “They would crucify you in court.”

  “I would do nothing illegal. Fighting to keep a slave would make me curious about what other choices they have made.” Ranni admitted. “What other mistakes and poor judgement have they exercised?”

  “That point I can support.” Flander agreed.

  “Flander handles some of the empires legal affairs.” Ranni explained. “Let’s finish eating and turn in.”

  Everyone turned their attention to their food and the meal concluded quickly. Kasey refused to meet his eyes after the first time and he suspected intimacy embarrassed her. That was something he could help her overcome. Her innocence was charming, but it wouldn’t last long, not when she lived among his people.

  “Come.” He said as he held out his hand to her. She gave him her hand without hesitation which he took as a good sign. “We will see you in the morning.” He said to no one in particular.

  Hel and Lane both wished them a good night. He was certain it would be. Maybe even better than last night had been. He herded his mate along the corridors to their room. In no time he had her naked and in the shower before she had a chance to pull away. Kasey didn’t show any signs that she didn’t want to be right where she was.   Epilogue

  Ranni and Kasey had settled into mated life and he had never felt better. She was his rock and she also gave him so much pleasure. Her mother had accepted their mating. They tried and failed to recover Kasey’s father, but they would continue in their attempts until they were successful.

  Meanwhile they patrolled Majuri space and kept the peace. His new family had each found their place among the crew and even rebellious Hel had settled into a routine and was about to become a medic while she continued to pursue her doctor’s training.

  Purgatory was rebuilding and they negotiated a treaty with the Majuri that gave them some protection. He was glad the world was recovering, but he was even happier none of his new family seemed to want to go back there to live.

  For now they were a happy family missing one member that was needed to make everything better. They might be patrolling space far and wide across the empire, but they were also keeping an eye out looking for clues in order to find his mates father and the others taken with him.
