  It had gotten to the point in the last week, where they tried not to discuss the mission even though it was constantly on everyone’s minds. With the videos and DVDs all done, they practiced just for the sake of something to do. Devon and his team filmed for the same reason although he suggested they might find uses for the shots they took. Stef was the only one still actively working on the project because she told him promoting never ends.

  He held her close and felt her relaxing slowly in stages. He wished he could relax with her. Her breathing calmed until it was slow and steady letting him know she was truly asleep. He smiled to himself, proud that he had eased her stress to the point that she could sleep. She looked like an angel, innocent and much younger than her true age as her face relaxed in deep sleep. If only he could join her in a restful sleep and the absence of worries if only for a little while.

  He must have drifted off because he woke and it was morning. Stef had gotten out of bed without waking him to allow him to sleep a bit longer. He knew she worried about him and had already commented on his sleeplessness just yesterday. He knew nothing would cure him until his brother was returned and this mission over. He got up, showered and was dressed as Stef quietly snuck back into his room.

  “You’re already up.” She grouched. “I thought you would finally catch up on your sleep.”

  “I just woke up a few minutes ago. I can’t believe you got out of bed without waking me.” He complained. The guys would give him a hard time if they knew. “Let’s get breakfast, I’m starved.” So they headed to the cafeteria

  A few more days, then they’d be told who the demon was that was held captive. Zeus had negotiated the agreement that they would be given a name and a vid clip so they knew he was still alright. As a way to pass time, Stef teased and delighted him with her jokes and stories about her sisters. None of them would appreciate the stories Stef had told on them and with all the demons hanging on every word, after all they all knew her sisters well, it would eventually get back to them. He was sure they would try to make her pay. He had learned about the way many siblings treated each other and it wasn’t all that different from the way demons treated each other.

  They said goodnight and retired for the night. He tossed and turned sure he would never sleep. He was finally sleeping when the alarm went off. Stef had predicted at some point he would sleep because his body would have no choice. He hated that she’d been right but he felt better now that he’d slept.

  They ate breakfast then each went their own way to work at whatever they could find to stay busy. They met back at the meeting room, those that could fit. The vid would be recorded for all the others to see. Lu sat nervously waiting, his patience long gone. He wanted to scream and punch something but all he could do was pretend to calmly wait. It was time and he went to his office to meet the others for Zeus’ call. He arrived just before it rang through.

  “I have you patched in and he’ll be calling any time. He doesn’t know you’re on the line and I’m muting you. Anything to say before I do?” Zeus asked.

  “No, we’re all here and we are waiting.” Lu confirmed.

  “The call is coming in.” Zeus informed.

  “I’m here as agreed.” A nasal voice that could really be male or female notified.

  “I see that.” Zeus observed.

  The screen moved to a cell with just a cot and a toilet in the corner of the room. It was reminiscent of a typical jail cell. The cot was occupied and the camera moved in closer to the poor pitiful creature that lay there. Every rib could be easily counted and the other bones were visible as well. Long filthy hair, dark and greasy hung over the pillow. He was so gaunt that Lu wasn’t sure who he might be.

  “He’s in terrible condition. He’s barely alive. I thought you said you were taking good care of him?” Zeus growled with obvious anger.

  “You should have seen him when I first got him. I’ve managed to heal his many wounds but you know healing takes a lot of energy. He will gain weight in time, your time since he won’t be with me by then. His name is Asb’el, a watcher demon. He’s a pain in my side but I’ll be glad to give him to you as agreed. Don’t try to cheat me.” The voice insisted. “You wo
n’t like me if you piss me off.”

  “We have no reason to cheat you. Just remember we can be harsh if cheated too.” Zeus assured.

  The voice laughed almost crazily making them fear for its sanity. “I look forward to the concert.”

  The screen went dark until Zeus switched it to him. “What was your opinion?”

  “It could have been Asb’el or almost anyone else even a human in that condition. We have no choice but to move forward. I hope it is Asb’el. We thought him long gone and I have greatly missed him.” Lu admitted.

  “We’ve lost far too many, I hope we can recover others.” Zeus said with sadness on his face. “We’ll see you in four days in Washington.”

  “We’ll be there. It’ll be nice to see you all again.” Lu admitted. Some of the other demons present added their greetings and then they left the room.

  Sierra, Doc and Way appeared on the screen to greet their little sister. “Stef!” They yelled together.

  “Hey guys!” She answered. She glanced over at Lu.

  “What? You want me to leave so you females can discuss this mysterious girl stuff?” He asked.

  “Yes.” Sierra said.

  “Maybe if you ask nicely.” He stated with a smirk.

  “What if she cuts you off?” Doc asked.

  “She won’t.” He said confidently. “She likes what I have.”

  “Hm, you sound a tad arrogant.” Way said.

  “Convinced, Sweetheart.” He assured while Stef turned red. “Okay, I’ll let you guys talk.” He blew kisses at them before he took his leave.

  He went out into the hall where the other demons stood around talking about the vid that they’d seen.

  “He looked horrible.” Win growled.

  “We can all agree on that.” Lu responded.

  “He was so dirty and emaciated, he could be almost anyone.” Homer threw in.

  All the demons had to agree. It could have been him or a dozen others. It might even have been a human though most humans would not have survived in that condition.

  “We must rescue him.” Abe said and everyone agreed.

  Stef came out smiling and Lu knew it was because she enjoyed her talk with her sisters. They were fun females and he liked them too, but not the same way he liked her. He put his arm around her and pulled her against him as the demons continued to speculate on the situation ahead of them. It was pointless, but it gave them something to do and filled the few days they had to get through until they would head out. In a few more days, Stef would see her sisters, possibly all three of them. Lu knew Sierra was coming but not if the others were.

  It seemed like all their time was spent waiting for something off in the distance. Everyone seemed grouchy, even he had been accused of being in a snit. He could see the problem with the others, but not with him. He double checked equipment and saw that their plane was loaded with instruments and other supplies needed for them to play. Everyone double checked and those that could, loaded their supplies on the plane in preparation.

  It was the day before the morning that they would leave. Nerves ran high and they had a small party, a sendoff if you would. None of those leaving drank much even though for the demons they handled their liquor very well. They didn’t play since everything was loaded but they had a couple of the demons playing DJ so they could dance. Demons loved to dance even though they didn’t do it as often as they liked. When they’d been held by Origin, they weren’t allowed to dance. Now, even though they were free, they had to hide like a shameful secret and that didn’t put anyone in the mood to dance.

  Lu grabbed Stef and swung her around the floor. The music changed from slow to fast and all the demons got on the floor and there was some serious shaking going on. Gorgeous hard bodies moving their hips like they were having sex. It was enough to drive poor Gloria and Dori, who had made it back, nearly crazy. Lu looked at their expressions and chuckled. Human females were so much fun to watch.

  Early the next morning, they lined up with their go bags. Most demons couldn’t mix with humans so they didn’t go on missions which made this trip exciting for them. Lu had gone a few times when the weather was cold enough to wear heavy gear to cover his extras, the wings and tail. Lu led them to the plane behind the facility on the runway.

  They took their seats on the plane. Once they met up with Zeus, they would stay the night and go over the information available to them one more time. The next day they would all load up and fly down to Texas. It would be a short flight compared to this one. He sat next to Stef and held her hand. If it was to comfort her or reassure himself, he couldn’t really say nor did he want to delve too deeply into it.

  They all had their seatbelts on and the pilot announced that they were ready to take off. He could feel the plane hurtling down the runway toward what he knew was the ocean. He could see it in his mind’s eye as they came right to the edge before breaking free of the ground. It would have been close as it always was when he watched planes take off from the island. Just feet before it could have plummeted into the water, but as it had every time he’d watched, the plane made it safely into the air.

  The plane was large enough everyone could get comfortable. Lu kicked back and relaxed. He and Stef talked about everything and anything. He’d never felt so at ease with anyone before. After a while, they both leaned back and slept until they were woke up by the pilot’s announcement that they were preparing to land.

  Lu could tell his demons were excited thought they tried to hide it. He didn’t blame them since they had been out in the world so rarely. They felt guilty because they were on a mission to save a brother demon and thought it was wrong to feel as they did. They would do whatever was needed to save him and that was all that was asked of them. Their feelings were their own, whatever they might be and no one would hold them accountable for them. It was something he would mention when he got the chance.

  They unloaded from the plane to find Zeus, Hades and their mates waiting for them. The other sister hadn’t come, she must have been needed at Olympus. Stef could catch up with her some other time. Right now, they had a mission ahead of them that would require their full concentration and a demon brother to save from a living hell. Lu and Stef got in with her sisters and their mates while the rest of the demons and Stef’s team, split up to ride in the other SUVs. They headed to the hotel the gods always used here. Cherish generally made all the arrangements and she felt using the same hotel guaranteed them the best price and the best service. He didn’t know what the rooms cost but the two previous stays had seen the best possible service.

  Lu was hungry and he knew once they dropped off their bags in the room, Cherish would have a private meal organized for them. He was right. They sat down at the tables ready to eat.

  “This is great. Did you set this up Sierra?” Stef asked.

  “Yes.” Sierra said with blush at the praise. “I knew you all would be hungry and tired so after you eat, you can all go to bed.”

  “Aren’t you tired from your trip too?” Stef asked.

  “No, we came yesterday so we could prepare everything for your arrival. Demons don’t travel much and I wanted their trip to be as perfect as possible.” Sierra admitted.

  “That was sweet of you and I know all the guys appreciate it.” Stef said.

  “I know I do.” Lu said with a wink as he took a big bite of his food. Everyone at the table laughed.

  The atmosphere was not as serious or worrisome that night as they enjoyed the food, drink and company. This was their time to prepare mentally and physically for the mission ahead. They were risking their lives and their freedom. No one wanted to be imprisoned again now that they had tasted freedom. Lu was sure if he was taken, he would die.

  If they dwelled on the dark side, they wouldn’t be able to go in and do what was needed to free Asb’el. He had never known freedom at all making him the saddest of the known demons. They’d had nearly two years of freedom while he looked like he’d been brought to the edge of deat
h and left there. Once they were all finished eating, they went to their rooms. Lu led Stef back to theirs and tonight he just wanted to hold her. Physically and mentally exhausted, he still needed her in his arms so he could relax enough to sleep.

  They stripped naked and they were ready for bed. He held his arms open wide for her. She slid into his embrace and he closed his arms around her protectively. Nothing would harm her while she was there. He felt warm and loved as his eyes grew heavier and his heart held nothing but good feelings for tonight.

  They seemed to wake at the same time and look at each other with a smile. Lu tried to decide why he felt so mellow and he realized he was happy. He worried it wouldn’t last but for now he intended to enjoy it. He’d had little of this in his life so he pulled her close and kissed her enjoying just being together before they started their day. A day that would be full of other people, plans and concerns.

  “We have to go or they’ll come looking for us.” Stef argued.

  “I know, but can I just lay here another moment and pretend we don’t have to?”

  “Just a moment and then we have to get dressed.” She agreed. His stomach took that moment to rumble like a bear. “Someone needs to eat anyway.”

  “I can’t deny it. My stomach thinks it’s been neglected.”

  “We can’t have that. I’ll admit I’m hungry too.”

  They got up and began to dress. They would be flying to Texas in a couple hours, so they packed while they were at it.

  “Let’s take our bags with us so we don’t have to come back.”

  Stef nodded and they carried them out. As they entered the lobby it was clear everyone had done the same thing. Breakfast was being served in the same meeting room, buffet style.

  “You can fill up that hungry stomach now.” Stef said with a laugh.

  Lu grabbed a plate and filled it full. She got one of her own and they went and sat down next to Sierra and Zeus. Doc and Hades joined them too for an enjoyable breakfast.
